Planning and conservation areas in Bromley

Bromley mainly consisted of fields, woods and open land until Victorian times. With the introduction of transport in the form of improved railway links to London it became a popular residential suburb. However it still has a high number of conservation areas, 44 to be precise. A conservation area is an area with additional planning controls. An area is designated as a conservation area by a local authority if it is an area of special architectural or historic interest with a character or appearance it is desirable to preserve or enhance.
