Westminster Council’s planning committee granted planning permission for an extension to Aldwych House. Architects, Sheppard Robson, submitted the planning application in 2014. The planning committee praised the scheme calling it “exemplary”.

Dan Burr, a partner at Sheppard Robson, stated “This is an area of London where rooftop extensions are not commonplace and we’re delighted that our design convinced the committee that bold transformations of rooflines, which are designed with sensitivity and conviction, are a viable option”.

Located within Westminster’s conservation area the roof top extension will add approximately 8 500 square feet of luxury office and reception space. The pavilion like form will consist of a number of geometrically folded shapes. Clad in zinc the structure is being built on top of the building’s mansard roof with carefully placed windows framing views of both the Southbank and City.

When planning the project the architects had two aims. Firstly to take into account the building’s classical design to ensure the completed extension would complement the existing structure. Secondly they wanted to create an extension that would improve the building’s overall proportion therefore bringing it in line with neighbouring rooftops.

The £15 million project was completed in 2015.
